chris nelson: the making of “never let me go”

10.09.20

When Chris shared the news of his "Never Let Me Go" single release, I was ecstatic, like go dude! And then he mentioned that he wanted me to help him execute the vision that he had for the project, to which I responded "huh? ME?!".

"Never Let Me Go" is Chris' first single release, and he envisioned incorporating different aspects of visual storytelling (photo and video) to communicate his identity, process, and journey in faith.

Through continued conversation with Chris, I fleshed out the concept little by little and eventually developed a concise theme. I immediately envisioned playing with light, shadows, and wide-open spaces to effectively communicate themes of process, solitude, and intimacy with God. As the song connotes, it is a vulnerable moment of frustration, humility, and surrender. And I wanted to capture that intimate moment in a way that was beautiful, genuine, vulnerable, and real.

One thing I respect most about Chris is his open-mindedness to receiving direction. NO PRESSURE but Chris is kind of a big shot so a lot relies on the artistic direction of this project. So I really appreciate that he trusted my vision throughout the process, and allowed me the space to take over this concept, break it down, and just execute.

This project was very interesting as it was my very first time collaborating with an artist and developing a visual story through music. Executing this project offered me a more in-depth look into visual strategy, cohesiveness, and the power of interpretation. My passion for narrative building has grown immensely and I am def looking forward to working with other artists and musicians to turn their visions into beautiful visual stories that allow their audiences to access just a glimpse of their processes and journeys.

I would like to thank Brandon and Obed for their flexibility, guidance, and assistance with this project. I literally couldn't have executed this without the two of them. Congratulations again to Chris on a new beginning. Blessings. #NeverLetMeGo
